Although they keep losing, based on scores of games, the Heat are still the league’s best team. The top 9 teams are tightly bunched. Also Memphis, New Jersey and Houston are much better than their records indicate.

Do these rating include whether a game was at home or on the road?

Yes. Most years Home edge is around 3 points.

is strength of schedule just based on opponents win-loss? that wouldn’t seem to make that much sense since these rankings are supposed to look past win-loss. or is it based on previous teams rankings on that list (don’t know how it would be implemented but it seems it would make more sense doing it that way)

Strength of schedule is simply average rating of all opponents, adjustedfor home and away. These ratings are based on scores, not won loss record.

Is there an approximate formula for converting these ratings into an expected record?
Something like 1 point = “X” games above .500.

1 point = 3 games over .500. so +5 should win 56 games etc.
