One interesting thing about these numbers is that, although the Heat constantly claim during interviews that their main focus is their defense, only 4 teams are worse than they are defensively (disclaimer: I’m a big Heat fan). They can be phenomenal defensively during parts of a game, but on average, overall, they don’t seem to be doing that well.

  2. Are the total numbers designed such that, for two teams, the difference in the numbers (after a HFA adjustment) is the projected margin of victory if they play?

    I just got “Mathletics” in the mail. Looking forward to reading it.

    I have a quick question.

    How large a sample is required before these ratings can be almost fully trusted?

    I agree that the 76ers have been playing very well, but I have a tough time believing they can sustain this level of play given that there were no dramatic roster changes to account for this much improvement.
