I am sure nobody (including the Mavs) predicted a 4-0 sweep of the Lakers, In retrospect it seems so simple : penetrate and move the ball until the Lakers miss a rotation and hit the open 3. For 3 years nobody could solve the Bynum-Gasol-Odom frontcourt combos. In this series (despite the announcers praising Bynum to the heavens) Bynum’s defense did the Lakers in. To prove this assertion note that when Dirk and Terry were in for 96 minutes Mavs were +62 points, rest of series Mavs were down 6 points. When Dirk and Terry were in and Bynum was in Mavs were +54 points in 61 minutes and outscored Lakers by 124-82 pace. When Dirk and Terry were in and Bynum was out Mavs were +8 points in 36 minutes and outscored Lakers only at a 99-89 clip,

What about Kobe Bryant? I saw no defense from him. Isn’t he responsible for the 2-guard (Terry)? Also, his shooting the ball with one-on-one/two isolations means he’s not getting everyone else involved. What stats do you have on him?

Wayne - as you know, with those sample sizes that could just be a total coincidence. I haven’t broken down the series yet, but it’s easy to have those correlations in 4 games with very little causality.

Is Dirk’s defense much improved over this season (or the last three seasons)?
That’s a big theme on talk radio, just wondering if plus/minus bore that out. [It seems like in the past, you've also argued that Dirk was about an average defensive player.]

Kobe had little impact on series. All I could find was Bynum in against Terry and Dirk was when series turned against LA.

The difference is certaintly significant (Byum in or out with Terry and Dirk in) at .05 level

He has a -5 defensive rating whic his pretty good. 5 points better per game than average. Much of this is due to his good defensive rebounding.
