Here are our final regular season NFL ratings, giving more weight to more recent games. The Pats have been truly awesome. Playoff forecasts will follow later. How can the Seahawks (the league’s 30th best team) host a playoff game?

  1. The Seahawks definitely got worse as the year went along. Notwithstanding that, having the 27th, 28th, and 31st ranked teams in your division definitely didn’t hurt them. Neither did having the third weakest schedule in the NFL.

On the other hand, the teams they played outside their division had a .55 winning percentage and four of them made the play-offs (don’t know if that is statistically typical for most teams in the NFL).

Conversely, Atlanta, Tampa, and New Orleans all had better records, but probably benefited from playing a bunch of their out-of-the-division games against the NFC West, which maybe inflated their records a bit. Their schedules ranked 20th, 25th, and 27th.

I can easily see the Saints putting a beat down on the Seahawks next week. But I also won’t be surprised if the Hawks pull an upset, especially if their defense plays well again, and given some of the injuries the Saints have.

  2. I know some people asked to have more weight on recent games, but for some teams (say, the eagles), should that final week really have had much weight?

  3. giving more weight to recent games may provide more consideration for late season injuries and other factors that could possibly be diluted given the amount of data from the whole season…
